The Availability of Organically Reared Livestock in the European Union
01/04/2010

This research for the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission established the current availability of organically reared livestock in each Member State of the EU-25 and assessed the future prospects for the sector. Council Regulation (EC) No 1804/1999 provides a number of derogations to the general principles of organic livestock production, including a derogation on the general principle that organic livestock production should take place in "fully organic" production systems. Using a case study methodology, this research evaluated the impact that this derogration has had on the sustainability of the organic livestock sector in selected Member States. Based on these findings, recommendations were made as to whether this derogation should be adapted.
