Assessment of the age profile of UK laying hen cages
06/01/2006
This telephone survey and analysis of the UK caged egg production sector for the RSPCA assessed the extent to which capital investments in existing battery cage facilities would be written-off by the end of 2011 prior to the full implementation of Directive 1999/74, under which production in this type of facility will no longer be permitted.  Approximately 25% of the UK caged production sector took part in the survey and the results showed that only a very small proportion of the UK caged flock would not have written off previous capital investments by the end of 2011 under three different write-off period scenarios.  The survey also investigated attitudes to the Directive and the likely intentions of caged producers.  This independent report was used as the basis of the RSPCA publication Coming of age.
