The impact of the implementation of Directive 1999/74/EC for UK egg producers
04/12/2004
This examination of the costs of converting current egg production facilities in the UK to enriched cages or alternative systems used a case study approach covering a typical small, medium and large scale egg producer.  In each case a set of possible options were compared financially in terms of the initial capital cost of conversion and the on-going running cost to provide producers with a guide as to which system might be most profitable for them post-2012.  This analysis was placed within the context of the market opportunities for eggs from non-caged systems.  This independent report for the RSPCA was used in the RSPCA publication The case against cages.
