Information to consumers on the stunning of animals
This comprehensive investigation for DG SANTE examined whether there is consumer demand for information on whether animals have been stunned or not prior to slaughter. A survey of 13,500 consumers across the EU-27 was carried out in the summer of 2013. This was followed by a consultation with EU-level stakeholders drawn from the meat supply chain, religious, animal welfare and veterinary organisations. Case studies were carried out in France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The outcome of the survey and consultation was used to investigate whether action needs to be taken to introduce legislation in this policy area.
